From A-Levels, NYP, to SMU: Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
Joel Lim Shu Sen (Class of 2022) actively built a strong portfolio at NYP, and is now Lee Kong Chian Scholar at the Singapore Management University.
Despite joining his coursemates after the first semester in NYP, Joel was driven and resilient. His can-do spirit shone through his outstanding performance, receiving the Mapletree Investments Book Prize for being the Top Year 2 Student, as well as the NYP-Courts Industry Scholarship.
Beyond managing his academics, competitions and work at Grab Singapore, the budding entrepreneur even earned the NYP Jumpstart Grant for his start-up, Nanobee – an end-to-end digital solution that matches nano-influencers to businesses.
From a Project Analyst at Enterprise Singapore to Projects Coordinator across six SEA countries at Hitachi Vantara, Joel gradually gained confidence as an industry-ready professional.
With guidance from Ms. Angela Cheng, his course manager and Mr. Simon Tan, his personal mentor, all his efforts translated into an outstanding GPA of 3.95, a Mapletree Bronze Medal, and a natural pathway to continue his business portfolio and entrepreneurship.
And a master of balancing books and fun, Joel also effortlessly juggled studies and play. In his final semester, he also learnt more about global marketing & e-business strategy at South Korea’s Kyonggi University as part of his overseas exchange programme.
Joel attributed his discovery of his ikigai in business to his lecturers’ nurturing and his industry experiences.
“I wanted to develop myself as a specialist but did not want to be limited to only one specialty. Although I was already working at Grab Singapore before enrolling in NYP, it was NYP that equipped me with team management and project management skills. I was able to strengthen my business acumen at NYP, and eventually earned a promotion to become the youngest Business Development Lead under Grab’s SG Strategy & Strategic Projects division.”
Now a Lee Kong Chian Scholar at Singapore Management University, Joel has been applying what he has learnt from NYP in his undergraduate studies in Business Management. He has also been admitted to the Dean’s List in AY23/24.
Joel’s enthusiastic personality shines even beyond his NYP journey, as he shared his SMU degree course and scholarship experience with Ms. Denise Leong (Senior Director(Student Affairs) & Registrar) and Ms. Doris Teh (Director, School of Business Management).
