The Future of Defence: SAS Students’ Perspective
As part of the Polytechnic Forum 2024, students from School of Applied Science engaged in a variety of exciting and meaningful activities, exploring topics related to the 40th anniversary of Total Defence in Singapore.
Our SAS students were part of a 500-strong participant contingent across all polytechnics. Over six days (25 Sept – 2 Oct 2024), they enjoyed a three-day residential component at D’Resort Singapore.
Besides panel discussions and dialogue sessions, the students also ventured into intriguing activities such as a Table-Top Exercise and Sandbox with Nexus, and an Army Camp Experience. 2 SAS students were also involved as student facilitators of this event, accumulating their leadership experiences beyond the classroom.
Our students share their enriching experiences:

“As the Assistant In Charge (AIC) of the event, I was in-charge of supporting NYP volunteers who were all working tirelessly to make the event the success that it was. This event was my first experience as an AIC hence, I am eternally grateful to my teachers, Ms. Wendy and Ms. Rene, who were lively and supportive. Having spent the 6 days of Poly Forum with my team, I am thankful for being able to watch them break out of their shells and grow in their unique ways. Undoubtedly, our developments are my most cherished part of this experience.”

“Poly Forum has been an incredibly immersive experience, seamlessly blending various elements to teach us about total defense while engaging all five senses. The programme included hands-on activities, discussions, quests, and meaningful dialogues.
One segment that particularly resonated with me was the journey to the Battle Box. The guided tour, enhanced by an audiobook, vividly recounted the final days of an army before the Japanese occupation. Each room was meticulously designed to evoke the atmosphere of that time.
A highlight of the experience was my interaction with Tan Teng Teng, the historian who helped build this exhibit from the ground up. She provided invaluable insights into the Battle Box, answering pressing questions and deepening our understanding of its historical significance. Her ability to clarify topics made the experience even more memorable and impactful.”

“The visit to Seletar Camp offered valuable insights into the strength, discipline, and teamwork that the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) embody. We explored advanced military technology, from night vision goggles and rifles, to learning about specialised units like Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Explosive (CBRE), highlighting their vital role in national security. The immersive experience deepened my appreciation for the military's technology and dedication, highlighting the importance of perseverance and adaptability in both military and civilian life. Understanding the SAF’s rigorous training to protect Singapore left a profound impact on me, enhancing my respect for them and the challenges they face.”
