Nursing: A transformative journey that changed my life
Margaret Lee, Deputy CEO and Chief Culture Officer of Alexandra Hospital, shares how her experience at NYP (Class of 1996) inspired her nursing journey.
Ms. Margaret Lee, Deputy CEO and Chief Culture Officer of Alexandra Hospital, traces her journey from Nanyang Polytechnic to discovering her true calling in nursing.
1. You shared in your interview with CNA that nursing was not your first choice of study after your O-Levels. What eventually made you decide to opt for NYP's Diploma in Nursing?
Although nursing wasn’t my first choice, I continued with the course because I recognised its unique blend of art and science, which resonates with my creative inclinations. Nursing requires not only technical skills but also compassion, empathy, and critical thinking – qualities that allow for artistic expression in patient care. Each interaction is an opportunity to connect deeply with individuals, making the practice profoundly human-centred.
I then decided to embrace the nursing course with an open mind, seeing it as a chance to grow both personally and professionally. I believe that every choice will offer you the opportunity to find your interest, uncover your personal space, and cultivate pride in your achievements – as long as you focus on the learning opportunities and be receptive to discover potentially new passions.
To motivate myself and give myself a reason to focus on my nursing studies, I accepted the NUH Nursing Sponsorship upon enrolling in NYP. I am glad to say that nursing has offered me a canvas to apply my creativity in problem-solving and communication, enhancing patient experiences and enabling me to contribute meaningfully to healthcare.
2. How did you find your learning experience in NYP’s Diploma in Nursing? In what way has it ignited your interest in nursing or facilitated your entry to healthcare?
My learning experience in NYP’s Diploma in Nursing has been transformative, igniting a genuine passion in healthcare. The course exposed me to diverse disciplines, expanding my learning horizon beyond traditional nursing concepts. I delved into subjects such as psychology and sociology, which deepened my understanding of patient care and the social factors influencing health.
I was passionate about the biological sciences and although many found the subject challenging, I love that subject. This was in part due to nurturing and caring lecturers who were very tolerant of typical students’ mischief and ignorance, and at the same time, instilled discipline and inspired us to challenge ourselves and do better.
Having attended an all-girls school for the past 10 years, the mixed student profile in NYP introduced a new dimension to my learning.
I gained invaluable perspectives through interacting with my batchmates from diverse races, ages, and backgrounds. Each of them brought unique experiences and insights, enriching our discussions and fostering our sense of community. This diversity has taught me the importance of empathy and cultural sensitivity in nursing.
Additionally, the clinical attachments have been instrumental in developing essential life skills. Through hands-on experiences, I honed my communication and negotiation skills, learned to manage my time effectively, and prioritised tasks under pressure. These lessons extended beyond the classroom, preparing me to navigate the complexities of patient care in real-world settings.
Overall, NYP’s Diploma in Nursing has not only solidified my interest in nursing; it has also equipped me with the tools needed to make a meaningful impact in the healthcare industry.
3. Was there anything memorable about your experience at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at NYP?
Back in 1993, NYP was newly established, with various courses sited at temporary campuses. The nursing course was sited at the Outram Campus which consisted of one main building; thus, there were limited facilities for co-curricular activities so our main focus was on our studies. What stood out are the lasting relationships I've built. The camaraderie with my classmates has been invaluable, turning friendships into a support network that has enriched my nursing journey.
Five of my batchmates now work alongside me at Alexandra Hospital, making our shared experiences even more meaningful. We’ve navigated challenges together, from late-night study sessions to clinical placements, and celebrated each other’s successes along the way. These bonds have not only enhanced my learning but also created a sense of belonging in a demanding and highly stressed profession. Together, we’ve fostered a collaborative spirit that continues to thrive in our professional lives.
Reflecting on my time at NYP, I cherish the laughter, support, and shared passion for nursing that has transformed our collective experience into a memorable foundation for our careers.
4. What advice would you give to prospective students considering a career in nursing?
Take the time to know yourself and understand what you truly want. Are you motivated by a desire to help others, a passion for promoting health education, or the opportunities available in a growing industry? Clarifying your goals will give you a strong foundation as you embark on this journey.
Nursing is a demanding yet rewarding profession, and self-awareness will help you navigate the challenges ahead. Be open to the various aspects of nursing. The field encompasses diverse specialties and roles, from bedside care to healthcare administration. Exploring different areas will broaden your perspective and may lead you to unexpected passions.
Actively listen when others offer advice. Whether it’s from instructors, experienced nurses, or your seniors, their insights can accelerate your learning and help you avoid common pitfalls. Embrace constructive feedback and be willing to adapt; this will make you a more effective nurse.
Nursing offers countless life lessons if you remain open to learning.
Each patient interaction is an opportunity for growth, both professionally and personally. You’ll gain invaluable skills in communication, empathy, and resilience that extend beyond the workplace. If you approach this journey with curiosity and a willingness to evolve, you’ll find nursing not only enriches your career but also shapes you as an individual.
Nursing will reward you more than you can ever give through caring for others. Do not be afraid to commit wholeheartedly if a fulfilling career is what you seek.
