Curious about different engineering specialties? NYP’s Common Engineering Programme spans one year and offers an introduction to various disciplines including aerospace engineering, additive manufacturing, robotics, materials technology, and more. Throughout the programme, you'll immerse yourself in engineering concepts and the polytechnic environment, enabling you to make a well-informed choice when selecting your engineering diploma course.
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Interest in engineering, especially in pursuing a career in engineering;
- Science/engineering-related experience in a school environment (through a CCA, a community activity, or workshop), or in an external context (perhaps in engineering courses, competitions attended, or online learning sites for engineering);
- Awareness of global engineering trends and news;
- Critical thinking, teamwork and analytical skills; and,
- Problem-solving abilities to develop innovative solutions in the engineering domains.
Interview
If you are shortlisted, you will be invited for an interview to share more about your passion for the course with a panel of interviewers. You will be assessed on your interest, aptitude, and communication and presentation skills. The duration of the individual interview will be between 15 to 20 minutes.
Some questions which you may be asked during the interview include:
- What are the reasons for choosing this programme?
- Can you share what learning units or aspects of this programme attracted you to apply?
- Did you do anything to affirm that engineering is a career suited for you?
- Share a recent engineering news article which is of interest to you.
- Have you taken part in any competition/CCA/activities that are science/engineering related?
Portfolio (Optional)
You should include in your portfolio, any evidence and/or activities (e.g., science & technology or engineering competitions) that showcase your character and involvement relevant to engineering.
Examples of what to include in your portfolio:
- Testimonials
- Certificates (e.g., academic, achievement and/or personal development)
- Awards or participation in science/engineering-related competitions, at school and/or national level
- Evidence of engineering projects, (e.g., coursework or CCA)
- Relevant learning journeys or Applied Learning Module (ApLM, formerly known as Advanced Elective Modules [AEM])
