My final-year internship was at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), within the Cancer Genetics Service under the Division of Medical Oncology. Over six months, I worked as a Research Coordinator intern, contributing to patient recruitment, data analysis, survey creation, and supporting research initiatives. The role demanded precision, effective communication, and technical skills.

One of my key responsibilities was managing and analysing data using Excel, where I developed flagging systems to track patient appointments and ensure timely follow-ups. I also cleaned datasets for statistical analysis using SPSS, enhancing data accuracy and reliability. Additionally, I conducted qualitative analysis by transcribing audio recordings, coding quotes, and summarising key findings.

I even taught an AI model to write a comprehensive research paper on ATM gene guidelines and management! This experience honed my understanding of genetic counselling and research communication.

It was also a memorable experience attending the PRECISE-IHCC Conference, where global leaders in genomic and precision medicine gathered to discuss advancements in patient care. The event showcased cutting-edge solutions and underscored the critical role of cross-cohort collaboration in addressing healthcare challenges. This exposure broadened my perspective on the evolving landscape of healthcare innovation.

Through mentorship from Mr. Chua Zi Yang and Ms. Caitlin Victoria from NCCS, as well as the guidance and support of the entire Cancer Genetics Service team, I gained valuable insights into clinical research processes and developed technical expertise. I became more adaptable, learnt to navigate challenges with resilience, and embraced innovative thinking. This internship has solidified my passion for healthcare and prepared me to contribute meaningfully to the pharmaceutical and research industries.
