Every year, the best of our students from the School of Engineering (SEG) test their abilities in the prestigious WorldSkills Competitions where they compete with youth across Singapore and worldwide to achieve world-class standards in this ‘skills olympics’.

In 2023, the SEG team clinched a total of 4 Golds, 2 Silvers, 4 Bronzes & 3 medallions, for 10 out of 17 relevant skills in the WorldSkills Singapore Competition (WSS). We proudly top other polytechnics & ITEs, and contributed to NYP’s achievement of an outstanding 15 out of 29 Golds!!

With the impressive medal haul during WSS 2023, 6 competitors from SEG advanced to represent Singapore at the WorldSkills ASEAN 2023 held in Singapore.

The team contributed significantly, securing 1 Gold (Team event), 1 Bronze (Team event), and 1 Medallion for Excellence out of 6 competitors. Special mention & kudos to our IoT Trade team who achieved an inaugural Gold for Singapore in this regional competition!

Internet of Things (IoT, Team Event) - Gold Medal

From mastering electronics in the classroom to gaining real-world insights through industrial visits, Esther and James' positive attitude, dedication and perseverance culminated in their triumphant victory at the WorldSkills ASEAN competition – winning a gold medal for the Internet of Things (IoT) team event.

Their remarkable achievement stands as a beacon of inspiration, proving that with passion and perseverance, any dream is within reach.

Esther and James shared, “The competition was really tough as we encountered many challenges and even an issue with our software. We learnt that teamwork and communication are very important, and the need to adapt quickly to new software, interfaces and programmes is critical. Aside from the competition, we really enjoyed meeting up with competitors from Indonesia, The Philippines and Malaysia!”

Mobile Robotics (Team Event) – Bronze medal

Inspired by "I, Robot" during his primary school days, Kah Kheng turned his interest into expertise through hard work and dedication. Under the guidance of his coach, Kannappan, Kah Kheng trained rigorously for months. Despite facing challenges, he poured his heart into building, assembling, and calibrating robots to perfection within tight timeframes.

Together with Xue En, the duo from the Diploma in Robotics & Mechatronics clinched Gold at WorldSkills Singapore 2023 for the category of Mobile Robotics (Team event). Their achievement earned them an entry ticket to the regional WorldSkills ASEAN 2023 competition!

Despite intensive training leading up to the WorldSkills ASEAN 2023 competition, Kah Kheng and Xue En encountered unexpected issues with their hardware device. Undeterred by this challenge, they demonstrated remarkable adaptability by adjusting their strategies and solutions on the fly.

Through perseverance and sheer grit, Kah Kheng and Xue En managed to enhance their performance throughout the competition, ultimately securing the Bronze medal.

Their experience echoes a valuable lesson: "Never give up. Break down the problem and solve it part by part." This mindset not only guided them through the challenges they faced throughout the competition; it also serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of perseverance in overcoming obstacles.
