Total Defence and Community Engagement at the Forefront of Polytechnic Forum 2024

Published on 30 Sep 2024

Youths head to the heartlands to drive awareness and encourage pledges to Total Defence through on-ground interactions with local community

Under the banner “Together We Keep Singapore Strong”, the Polytechnic Forum 2024 (PF2024) has brought together 500 students from the five polytechnics to explore the evolving role of Total Defence in safeguarding Singapore’s future. This year’s forum, organised by Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), comes as the nation marks the 40th anniversary of Total Defence, and runs from 25 September to 2 October 2024.

A key highlight of PF2024 is the introduction of the Community Action Project (CAP), where participants engage residents to raise awareness about Total Defence. Forum attendees are also mobilising support for SAFRA’s I Pledge Total Defence campaign, encouraging the public to show their commitment to national defence.

At the Opening Ceremony held earlier today, Minister for Education, Mr Chan Chun Sing engaged in a dialogue session with forum participants on the role youths can play in our Total Defence.

Through a curation of hands-on activities, panel discussions and learning journeys, participants will experience first-hand how organisations and activities on the ground contribute to the pillars of Singapore’s Total Defence.

PF2024 will culminate with a closing ceremony on 2 October 2024, where Senior Minister of State for Defence and Manpower, Mr Zaqy Mohamed, is Guest of Honour.

SLTC Psalm Lew, Director of Community Engagement at Nexus MINDEF, said: “Polytechnic Forum 2024 is Total Defence-themed and coincides with our year-long commemoration efforts of 40 years of Total Defence this year. The forum brings together energetic and dedicated youths from the five polytechnics, and we look forward to hearing fresh and innovative ideas that will contribute to building a stronger and more resilient Singapore.”

Chairman of PF2024’s organising committee, and Director of Student Development & Alumni Relations at NYP, Dr Lina Chong, highlighted the collaborative spirit of the event: “Polytechnic Forum 2024 brings together youth from across Singapore to collectively exchange ideas on how we can prepare for future challenges. We aim to inspire them to create innovative solutions to mitigate potential disruptions and safeguard our nation's future.
