NYP Celebrates Successful First Students Tutored Under Revolutionary New Teaching Model

Published on 03 May 2024

SINGAPORE, 03 MAY 2024 – Nanyang Polytechnic today celebrated the graduation of its inaugural batch of students, tutored under the Professional Competency Model (PCM). Unveiled in 2020, a key feature of the PCM is the close collaboration with industry partners to co-develop curriculum, co-teach classes, and co-certify training. With companies at the forefront of their expertise areas, learners acquire the skills and competencies highly sought after by future employers.

The first batch of students, under the Diploma of Applied AI and Analytics entered their first year in April 2021. Today, all 48 of them can proudly hold their heads high as they embark on their next bound.

Students were sent to companies as diverse as PwC, Accenture, EY Singapore, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Land Transport Authority (LTA), Boston Scientific Asia Pacific and Merck, Sharp & Dohme (MSD) for internships and project collaborations. In additional, nearly 80 percent of the cohort received the best possible grade from their employers.

Minister for Education, Mr Chan Chun Sing, graced their graduation ceremony at the School of Information Technology today.

Mr Russell Chan, Principal and CEO of Nanyang Polytechnic, said, “We’re proud of these students. Their journey and the validation from employers reconfirm the value of our Professional Competency Model (PCM). The PCM epitomises our innovative spirit. We set out to rethink what a polytechnic education can be, how to better tap on NYP’s strength in our close ties with industry majors, and our students have emerged with flying colours.”

The students’ three-year long diploma covered a range of course competencies including applied AI, analytics with programming, data security and governance, emerging technology and applications, and more. With leading industry partners like Microsoft, AWS Academy, SAS, Oracle Academy and Google Cloud co-developing and co-teaching curriculum, the batch also received additional industry certifications, namely:

  • The Certificate of Competency in Visual Analytics, co-issued by NYP and Microsoft;
  • The Certificate of Competency in Predictive Analytics for Data Science, co-issued by NYP and SAS Institute;
  • The Certificate of Competency in Database Design & Administration, co-issued by NYP and Oracle Academy; and
  • The Certificate of Competency in AI Ethics & Governance (Associate Level), co-issued by NYP and Singapore Computer Society

In addition, 22 of the graduates have been awarded the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate; 7 of them have been awarded the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner; and 4 of them have been awarded the Professional Scrum Developer (PSD).

All these are professional certifications that working adults in the industry sit for to demonstrate their skillsets. These certifications lend our new graduates a leg up as they enter into their new bound of life.

Between 02 and 09 May, Nanyang Polytechnic conferred diplomas, specialist diplomas, and advanced diplomas to more than 5,300 graduands. At the ceremony, Minister Chan also awarded NYP’s top graduates with nine Distinguished Awards.

Calling on all graduates to stay creative, curious and compassionate, he reminded them to embrace change, innovate, and create bolder and brighter ideas for tomorrow. He also urged them to set aside time to upskill and deepen their skills mastery, and to continue caring for those around them to build a more inclusive and caring Singapore.
